Thameslink passengers are facing a sixth day of misery as engineers tackle flooding caused by a second pipe burst in a tunnel in central London.

Operator Govia Thameslink Railway tweeted this afternoon that there were delays of up to 40 minutes.

Thames Water said flooding problems caused by the original leak, plugged on Sunday, had returned but added it was still checking its pipes, including sewers, to find out where it was coming from.

A leak from a 16-inch pipe swamped the tracks between Farringdon and St Pancras stations on Friday, with engineers working ever since to clear the water.

More than 1,000 trains have been cancelled since the first main burst on Friday with a further 133 hours of combined delays to those trains which have been running.

Each train can carry up to 750 passengers, who will experience more disruptions this weekend, with limited trains to and from central London.

Route upgrade work will mean there will be no trains between West Hampstead Thameslink and Farringdon via London St Pancras International from around 11.45pm on Friday to 3.45am on Monday, February 2.
