Members of St Albans United Synagogue gave a day of their time to support good causes on Mitzvah Day.

During the event on Sunday, November 22, their chosen Mitzvah – good deed in Hebrew – involved a makeover of a much-valued but neglected garden of a care home for adults with special needs.

While the adults were digging, shovelling and planting in the garden, children gathered in the synagogue to plant and decorate flower pots as well as wind chimes, bird houses and feeders.

St Albans Synagogue member Vivienne Morris, who was one of the project’s organisers, said: “We had an amazing day and despite the sudden cold snap we got most of the work done.

“We were delighted with the transformation we achieved and pleased to see the difference we made to the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.”

The St Albans Synagogue project was one of more than 1,000 organised nationally on Mitzvah Day.
