An “extraordinary warm-hearted” student living with Tourette’s Syndrome has been awarded runner-up in a Young People of the Year awards.

St Albans School for Girls student Kat Thomas, who is in Year 13, was named as one of two runners-up in this year’s Smith-Milne Young People of the Year awards – also known as YOPEY’s awards.

The award ceremony was held at Moor Park Mansion House on Tuesday, November 10 and the judging panel was led by Robert Voss of the lieutenancy which represents the Queen in Hertfordshire.

Miss Thomas was recognised for the award because of her ability to balance her Tourette’s Syndrome, volunteering at Rainbows, St John Ambulance and a church group in Wheathampstead and A Levels so well.

Debbie Johnson Smith, a coordinator at the school, said: “A YOPEY award is often referred to as the equivalent of an Oscar for young people who give to others.

“Kat Thomas was nominated for this award because she is an extraordinary warm-hearted young person who’s giving and service to other is truly outstanding.

The remarkable fact is, Kat balances her A Level studies with her voluntary commitments while also coping with Tourette’s Syndrome”.

Miss Thomas was diagnosed with the condition when she was 14-years-old but her symptoms do not take the form of swearing.

The Tourette’s symptoms she experiences are sometimes verbal outbursts but her physical tics mean her leg or arm will involuntarily curve inwards.

Mrs Johnson Smith added: “No matter which symptoms she has to endure, she is determined to cope and still prefers to put others’ needs before her own.

“Kat’s dream is to become a paramedic in the future. The reason why she wants to follow this career path is because it will mean she can help people when they most need it and make a positive difference.”

Miss Thomas said: “I was surprised and a bit embarrassed to be chosen because I don’t think I did anything special and I am honestly not used to being in the limelight.”

As part of her YOPEY award, Miss Thomas was given £100.

Half of the prize money will be going to Miss Thomas to treat herself and the rest will be going to her nominated charity, Christian charity 2:67.
