A young campaigner won an award for raising awareness of mental health problems among young people.

Olivia Brown, a student at St John Lawes School in Harpenden, was presented with the Diana award following nomination in the active campaigner award category.

The Diana award is a legacy to Princess Diana’s belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better.

Olivia said: “At the awards event the winners’ stories were read as the awards were being collected and it was inspirational to hear about all of the work that other young people have been doing.

“It is an amazing recognition of achievement and something that I will always be very proud of.”

Olivia has also been part of the Harpenden Youth Town Council for two years and has campaigned for the young people of the area.

She developed a presentation and questionnaire for all Year 11 students to create awareness and gain an understanding about the problems they face.

Olivia is using school assemblies and writing a booklet for parents is now working to help students and parents to be more aware of mental health issues that young people of their age face through assemblies and also a booklet for parents.

Chris Wright of Sir John Lawes Academies Trust said: “Many events and local projects happen as a result of Olivia's work on the Harpenden Youth Town Council.

“She is helping Year 11 students and their parents focus on mental health issues and giving them as much support as possible during this busy exam period.”
