Energy efficient street lights will brighten up streets in St Albans by late July.

Hertfordshire County Council is upgrading full night street lighting on St Albans’ roads and footpaths using the latest Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology.

This follows the upgrade of more than 12,600 streetlights on all the main arterial routes across the county.

Cllr Terry Douris, cabinet member for highways, said: “Upgrading our existing lights to this modern technology forms part of Hertfordshire County Council's ongoing commitment to maintain and improve roads for the benefit of all Hertfordshire residents.

“During the course of the work in St Albans, we aim to keep disruption to a minimum, and we’d like to thank you for your patience if you do encounter delays to your journey.”

LEDs use less energy and so powering them creates less carbon dioxide than standard street lamps, helping to cut the county council’s carbon tax commitment.

The new lights are connected to the central management system, which detects faulty lights.

The system enables light adjustments with the flick of a switch at a central point, allowing light levels to be reduced between 11pm and 6am.
