St Albans MP Anne Main said she is “very happy” with Britain’s decision to leave the EU, despite her own constituency voting to remain.

Yesterday’s historic referendum saw 62.7 per cent of people from St Albans voting to remain, compared to 37.3 per cent who wanted to leave.

However, St Albans MP Anne Main said this is a “national decision” and the country as a whole has chosen to leave.

She said: “I’m obviously aware of the result in St Albans but I’m also very aware of how loud and supportive many people on the Leave campaign have been.

“I’ve experienced the support first hand through conversations with people living here and in the surrounding areas.

“This is a national decision and the people have spoken for their country as a whole.

“The county as a whole has spoken too, and their decision is to leave, but obviously there are areas where various factors cause people to think differently.”

Overall, 54,208 people from St Albans voted for Britain to remain in the EU compared to 32,237 people who voted to leave.

Mrs Main said: “I’m obviously very happy with the result. It’s the result that I have been campaigning long and hard for.

“This is an example of the people of Britain speaking out and telling us that they want to leave and that their best interests will be served outside the EU.

“It is clear that the vast majority of British people want the safety and control of their own country.”

Hitchin and Harpenden Peter Lilley said: "I am proud that the British people have had the wisdom, courage and self-confidence to take back control of our laws, money and borders and to ignore the prophets of doom."

"I am proud that the British people have had the wisdom, courage and self-confidence to take back control of our laws, money and borders and to ignore the prophets of doom.

"I am sorry the Prime Minister has announced his resignation – I had hoped he would stay on while working with competent and committed ministers to achieve a smooth and speedy departure from the EU."

Watford, Three Rivers, Dacorum and Hertsmere all voted to leave the European Union.
