More than 30,000 people from south west Hertfordshire have signed an online petition calling for a second referendum on whether Britain should leave the EU by implementing a new rule.

The petition calling for a second EU referendum in the wake of a vote for Brexit has gathered more than 3 million signatures.

The petition, "EU Referendum Rules triggering a 2nd EU Referendum", wants to implement a cause where any referendum on a departure from the EU with a turnout lower than 75 per cent and a majority under 60 per cent would need to be retaken. No such rule exists at the moment.

People in the St Albans constituency have provided the most signatures with 11,167 signing the petition.

Some 10,174 have signed from Hitchin and Harpenden, while 7,257 from Watford have signed.

The Hertsmere constituency has also gathered 6,912 signatures.

On Thursday, 51.9 per cent of votes were cast to leave the EU, versus 48.1 per cent for remaining part of the bloc.

In St Albans, 62.7 per cent voted to Remain compared to 50.3 per cent who voted to Leave in Watford.

The petition comes just over a month after Ukip leader Nigel Farage said he would fight for a second EU referendum if the Remain campaign won by a narrow margin.

Having passed the 100,000 signatures threshold the petition, created by Leave voter William Oliver Healey, will be considered for debate by parliament and is currently awaiting a date.
