Harpenden defeated Berkhamsted 36-32 in the quarter-final of the Tony Allcock Trophy.

One rink had a very tight game throughout but pulled ahead to win by six shots at 21 ends. The other rink fell behind by 11 shots but made a magnificent recovery in the last three ends to only lose by two as Harpenden won by four.

The teams were Tony Redford, Woody Donoghue, Lesley Tutt and Janet Hubball and David Brooks, Linda Brooks Jan Holland and Noel Roberts.

In a nail biting finish, Harpenden edged to victory over Batchwood Hall by one shot in the first round of the Jones Cup.

The away team was Barrie Hills, John Thomson, John Millins and Jack Blissett and the home team was Rob Newby, Alan Bostock, Gordon Burrow and Ken Murray.

Harpenden take on North Mymms in the next round of the competition.

Harpenden had a successful district league game against Townsend on Wednesday, winning on three rinks out of four, as they claimed 65 points to Townsend’s 15 points in the 74-72 victory.

The top rink was Hills, Eamon Roberts, Mike Barnes and Chris Poulter.

Tom Muir won in the men’s two wood singles to reach the semi-finals of the county competition. Muir and Kevin Brazier won their fourth round tie in the county pairs competition earlier in the week.

Noel Roberts won his county singles round two match against Gordon Price at Shire Park 21-8.

The club held their internal triples Barlow-Redford competition on Sunday. Ten teams took part and a round robin was followed by the quarter and semi-finals. The two winning teams that went through to finals day were Redford, Eamon Roberts and June Gauntlett and Ishbel McDonald, Tim Dale and Doug Hall.

In the ladies friendlies, there was mixed success for Harpenden. In the game against Potten End, they won on all three rinks for a 63-33 victory.

Top rink was Brooks, Sheila Rider and Lorna Thomson as they won 23-7. The game against Barton-Le- Clay was lost 72-60 and they had a win against Batchwood Hall. The men’s game against Potten End was rained off on Sunday after 11 ends.
