Verulamians’ trip to Barnet Elizabethans was postponed on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch.

It meant all the focus switched to the seconds’ Herts Merit Table match at Hitchin with the side running out 25-17 winners.

With a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch and the sun streaming into the opposition’s eyes, Vees managed to turn the game around after being 10-5 down at half-time.

McCallister scored a Vees try in the opening minutes and after that a resilient defence kept Hitchin at bay until their winger and nippy fly-half crossed the line for two well-taken tries.

Sam Richmond, Vees captain, played his first game since breaking his ankle early on in the season.

Verulamians gained the initiative and were rewarded with tries from the electric Bradley Bruce, the rumbling prop Harry Mack and the ever industrious, tenacious Ben Brewer and Sam Allen to see Vees end on a high with a deserved away victory.
