Amy Platten won bronze at the Under-18 European Judo Cup in Romania.
The 15-year-old, from St Albans, recovered from a tough start to claim the second European Cup bronze medal of her young career in the competition at Cluj Napoca.
She recovered brilliantly from losing her first contest on penalties to a strong Ukrainian player, by catching her next opponent, a Romanian, with a powerful arm lock for a submission.
Her next fight was against the Italian European Cup winner, Martina De Blasio. Platten dominated the Italian and caught her with a well-timed Ashi Waza (foot sweep) for a seven-point wazari, enabling her to manage the four-minute fight until the end.
This took her to the bronze fight against the Serbian fighter Zorana Pavlovic. Despite receiving a heavy blow to the face, and sustaining a nose bleed, Platten again used a high energy strategy to score from a big attack and control the contest and win the bronze.
She said: “I love representing my country and I am happy once again to be in the medals. I will be training hard over the next few weeks for my next European Cup in Portugal at the end of May and will give it my best to get gold and hopefully will be selected for the European Championships in Finland in July.”
