St Albans Hockey Club ‘Flyerz’ recently took to the astroturf for 11 and a half hours of fun.

Supported by coaches and volunteers from the club, participants from the Oaklands College Landmark and Springfield Supported Learning and Internship programmes enjoyed skills coaching and drills, culminating in some very competitive games.

For some it was their first introduction to the game while, for others who had participated in earlier sessions, it was a great opportunity to develop their hockey skills.

St Albans Flyerz is the disability hockey project initiated during 2015 by head coach and England team manager Andy Halliday.

It aims to make hockey available to all, via inclusive sessions at Oaklands College.

The initiative builds on similar successful initiatives at a growing number of hockey clubs, whose development is supported by Access Sport, sponsor of a wide range of inclusive sport programmes around the UK.

Kirsty Armstrong, the Oaklands College Sport Maker, said: ‘It’s great to see students with a huge range of disabilities all having the chance to be involved in sport which wouldn’t be possible without the help of the volunteers who do such a great job with them’.
